There's nothing better than those special celebrations that are all about family. And Father's Day is definitely one of those special days. It's a chance to show Dad a great time and thank him for being there for you.

So how are you going with gifts? Even if you've bought Dad something you know he's going to love, giving him something made by the family has an even deeper meaning.

So we've pulled together some easy but thoughtful DIY suggestions, just for Dad. Even better, why not DIY some of these together with Dad on the day for some quality family time.

A chair, just for Dad

Think your Dad is a #1 Dad? Then tell it like it is with his very own personalised director's chair. The timing is perfect with milder weather coming our way, so Dad can sit back and oversee the next barbecue, beach or backyard family time from his very own 'throne'.

What you'll need:

  • A director's chair
  • Self-adhesive house number and letters to spell out #1 DAD, including two 'H' stickers.
  • Scissors
  • Taubmans sample pots in white, blue, red and yellow, or any combination of colours you like. Just make sure you have a contrasting colour for the first outline.
  • Paint tray
  • Stencil brush
  • Disposable gloves
  1. Remove the cloth seat back panel from the director's chair. Peel the stickers off the back of the self-adhesive number and letters. Attach them to the rear of the seat back panel to spell out #1 DAD. Create the hashtag symbol by cutting out the stems of the two 'H' stickers.
  2. Pour small amounts of paint into a paint tray. Using the stencil brush, apply white paint to create a rectangular shape over the stickers with a dabbing motion. Then apply the blue paint on top and around the edges, blending a little as you go.
  3. Wearing disposable gloves, peel off the stickers while the paint is still tacky and then leave to dry completely.
  4. Taking a small artist's brush, paint red hearts and yellow stars, or whatever you think Dad will like. Leave to dry then return the seat back panel to the chair.

Turn paint cans into lanterns

Don't take those empty paint cans down to the tip. Instead, turn them into decorative lanterns that you can hang around the backyard or place on your table to create a magical atmosphere for Dad's special day and beyond. They’re perfect for lighting up a family backyard BBQ in the evening! If you have any leftover paint, you can also use it to paint the can and give it a new look.

Simply make holes all around the metal cans using an electric drill. If you have any leftover paint, you can also use it to paint the can and give it a new look. Then place candles in the bottom of the cans.

Pro tip: put the candles in a glass cylinder, vase or votive holders inside the can to make them last longer.

Upcycle old photo frames

You're sure to want to capture photos of Dad's special day. So now's the time to upcycle your old photo frames and give them a new lease of life to hold onto those precious memories. You can even create your own customised colour for your frames using Taubmans Coloursmith sample pots.

Remember to prepare the surface of your photo frames to get the best results from your paint. Clean them thoroughly, and if they're glossy, sand them to roughen them up. Use a primer on bare wood, metal or other slick surfaces so that the paint sticks.

Then, choose one of Taubman's Semi Gloss Water Based Enamel paints to give your new photo frames the perfect finishing touch.
