Open the door to a new look
Doors are important but often overlooked features of a home. They provide privacy, divide up spaces, muffle noises and keep out drafts. They can also provide an important design function, as an accent to complement the aesthetic of each room. But over time, constant use can take a toll on their appearance. So, if your interior and exterior doors are looking a little worse for wear, it may be time to give it some love and attention.
The good news is that a door refresh is easier than you think. All you need is the right equipment and to follow a few simple steps. Before you begin, gather the necessary supplies:
- Sandpaper
- Cleaning solution (mild soap and water)
- Painter's tape
- Dropsheet
- Scraper
- Crack Filler
- Screwdriver
- Old rags or paper towels
- Primer
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Roller
In this guide, we'll walk you through the process in three stages: Prepare, Repair, and Paint. Let's get started!
Stage 1: Prepare
No matter how easy the job is, preparation is key. Follow these steps to minimise clean up and achieve a more professional finish.
1. Use a screwdriver to remove hardware such as door knobs, handles, and any other attachments. Set them aside in a safe place.
2. Lay down a Dropsheet to catch any paint drips and protect the surrounding area from spills and splatters.
Stage 2: Repair
Inspect your door for any damage or imperfections. For a better paint finish, you’ll need to repair the surface before moving forward.
1. Use a scraper to remove any loose or chipping paint from the door. This will help the paint go on smoothly and evenly.
2. If there are larger cracks or holes, use the scraper to apply Sika Filler - 105. If you want to achieve a very smooth finish for the inside door, Sika Filler – 101 is the right choice. Spread the product evenly and let it dry. Once dry, sand the area until smooth.
Stage 3: Paint
Now that your door is prepped and repaired, it's time to bring it back to life with a fresh coat of paint.
1. Use a mild cleaning solution to wipe down the door and remove any dirt and grime. Let it dry completely.
2. Apply painter's tape to protect any areas you don't want to get paint on, such as windows or hardware.
3. For best results, always use a high quality prep product like Taubmans 3-in-1 Prep to ensure proper paint adhesion and a smooth finish.
4. Use a high-quality paintbrush or roller to apply Taubmans Water Based Enamel. Start with the panels and recessed areas, then move on to the flat surfaces. Once the first coat is dry, apply a second coat.
5. When removing painter’s tape, for best results:
- Allow the paint to dry fully
- Score the edge of the tape using a sharp knife to release the paint.
- Carefully remove the tape.
Don't forget
- Ensure proper ventilation while painting by opening windows and doors.
- Allow sufficient drying time between coats and before reattaching hardware or closing the door.
- Regularly clean and inspect your door to keep it looking fresh and extend its lifespan.
