With winter behind us, thoughts turn to our end-of-year plans and what's on for Christmas. Which means it's also the perfect time to give your home a fresh new look to match your festive plans. We're not talking major overhauls. But there are so many quick and easy ways to use paint to make your entertainment areas pop and create new festive memories with inspiration from the great Australian outdoors.
Feel the mood
Where do you hold your festive celebrations? Indoors or out? The bush or the beach? Be inspired by the colours of Australia and the natural environment that surrounds us to create the mood you're looking for.
Maybe you're someone who creates a mood board of key colours that you'll carry through to every element - from your Christmas decorations, to your dining settings, and right down to your wrapping paper. Or you just want to add a fresh wow factor for your family and guests, whichever way you lean, here's some inspiration for bringing those festive Australian vibes to life.
While red and green are traditional colours, give them a twist inspired by Australian native flora. Think of the various rich red tones found in natives like waratah or kangaroo paw, or the different shades of eucalyptus leaves. From deep dark green of the most common variety through to the subtler silver grey-green of the gunni variety.
But don't be restricted by traditional colours. The colours of the season are different here in the southern hemisphere. What will be in bloom in your garden? Perhaps it's the orange-tinted pink of a grevilia, or a fresh gentle burst of yellow from a myrtle wattle.
If your Christmas is a coastal one, bring the dazzling shades of the ocean into your home. From the many tones of deep blue to dazzling aquas, these colours contrast beautifully with celebratory touches of silver or gold, or the delicious creamy white that cap our waves.

Festive feature wall
To really make an impact with your Christmas decor theme, paint a feature wall in your chosen colour, whether it's an inside wall or an exterior wall of your outdoor entertaining area.
Feature walls provide a decorative focal point that instantly gives a space a new look and feel. They can also help you to 'section' a large living area, such as the dining area of an open plan space. It's a great way to switch-up your home decor without investing in a lot of time or money. Choose a wall without windows so you don't end up with two different focal points competing for attention.
Get ready for outdoor entertaining
For many Australians, Christmas celebrations centre around the great outdoors. Your outdoor area often doubles as your festive dining room and party central. So, after being underused during the cooler months, now's the time to get your outdoor furniture ready for the party season ahead.
A fresh coat of paint will make your furniture look like new. Consider painting chairs in different colours. Add a festive stencil if that's your style. Again, it doesn't have to be traditional. Christmas in Australia is not snow and reindeers. So if your colour inspiration is the waratah, for example, create your own stencils by tracing an outline of a waratah on cardboard and carefully cutting it out using a craft knife.
