It's understandable that the rooms where we eat, sleep and entertain are top of mind when it comes to renovations. So more functional rooms, like mudrooms, pantries and storage rooms, often lag or even drop-off our project lists all together. But that doesn't mean you can't turn functional rooms from frumpy to fabulous - with a little strategic planning of course.
This type of renovation should optimise space while enhancing aesthetic appeal and liveability. Remember to:
- Keep the primary purpose of the room front of mind. Take note of how everyone uses the space; what's working well and what isn't.
- Plan your layout and placement of furniture or cabinetry to make the most of the room's purpose and traffic flow.
- What's worth keeping and what's not, and how can you apply smart space-saving storage solutions. And don't forget lighting. It can enhance a space and improve the room's usability.
Mudroom Makeovers
Whether specifically designed as a mudroom or a porch you've covered-in, this high traffic area is the first introduction to your home. So it should be welcoming and warm, as well as practical.
Create clear drop zones for boots, coats, umbrellas and pet towels. Declutter and reconfigure the space to maximise flow and storage. To store coats and scarves, coat racks that include a bench and shoe storage are an all-in-one solution. If space is limited, a standing coat rack is ideal. Or make a colourful design feature using coloured round wood coat wall hooks.

Choose complementary colours for shelves and walls. Or if you're feeling creative, design and paint shelf liners, or use chalkboard paint to create a handy place to write notes and messages.
Revamp your storage room
Storage rooms, often referred to as the 'junk room', often go on the back burner because improving its efficiency and visual appeal can seem overwhelming. But with so many specialty storage solutions available that won't blow your budget, it can be easier than you think.
A combination of cabinetry and open shelving is not only practical but can be decoratively pleasing. Make the most of vertical space using shelves, hanging racks or tall storage units, such as floor-to-ceiling bookcases that draw the eye upward and create an illusion of high ceilings and spaciousness. Make the most of ground level with storage bins.
Light-coloured walls reflect light and make rooms appear larger, so choose neutral or energising colours, such as light taupe, soft blue or even a sunny yellow, and don't forget ceilings and floors in your colour palette.
