The colour scheme of your weatherboards and trims adds a stylish level of sophistication that can instantly update your home. And there's no better time to paint your weatherboards than in the warmer, drier months of Spring.

But while good looks are important, so too is protecting your weatherboards to extend their life span. Weatherboards may be hardy, but they have to bear the brunt of our harsh weather conditions, from hail and rain, to scorching sun. So, giving them some much-needed TLC from time to time using a high-quality exterior paint can keep them looking fresh, modern and well maintained.

The right paint not only impacts the quality of the finish, but more importantly, adds a fresh protective layer from the elements, lengthening the life of your boards and making future touch-ups even easier. So, it's definitely worth the investment!

Finding your colour story

Now that the practical side has been taken care of, the fun part begins. Colours. You can get your Taubmans® All Weather sample pots tinted to match thousands of colours from the Taubmans® colour wall at your nearest Bunnings store.

Once you get your sample pots home, make sure you test them where you plan to use them. Try them out on a clean section of weatherboard and let them dry to get a true idea of what they'll look like.

Getting ready to paint

Don't forget to prepare your weatherboards before painting. Clean them down with a broom. Take off any flaky paint with a scraper or high-pressure hose. Fill any cracks or gaps between the boards with an exterior gap filler, make sure to use a product that's UV-resistant with some flexibility, so it can withstand the changes in weather.

In most cases, a primer isn't needed with a self-priming paint like Taubmans® All Weather. However, if your boards have been painted before, repaired and filled, or are rich in tannin, Taubmans® 3 in 1 Prep should be considered for optimum results.

It seals any imperfections, helps your paint to adhere for an even finish, and offers the following benefits:

  • Suitable for interior & exterior
  • Quick-drying
  • High hiding, filling and sanding properties
  • Primer, sealer and undercoat in one
  • 500ml, 1L, 4L, 10L, 15L

Now, you're ready to get out your paint tins and give your home some serious kerbside appeal. Keep an eye on your weather app to plan the perfect days for painting. Not too hot, not too cold, and definitely no rain or storms. Ideally, a paint day needs temperatures above 10°C and below 35°C. If you can't avoid painting on a hot day, work on the shady side of the house.

Paint day has arrived!

All the prep’s done. You've masked around your doors and window frames. And the forecast is for a beautiful day to give your home a stunning face lift that will protect your boards for years to come. Happy painting!
